Four Tet

There Is Love In You / Label: Domino / Release Date: Jan 2010

Kieran Hebden | myspace | returns as Four Tet for There is Love in You, his fifth full-length album and first in nearly five years. Having kept busy with remixes of everyone from Radiohead to Madvillain, Hebden shows no sign of rust on lead single Love Cry,” a lush, sprawling house jam that builds upon a jazzy drum loop over the course of its nine minute run time. The remainder of There is Love in Yous nine tracks should go a long way in demonstrating why Four Tet is one of the most dynamic electronic acts now.

Syntaks – Blue Sunshine Video

The hypnotic video for Syntaks’ “Blue Sunshine” — a gorgeously lumbering standout from the Danish duo’s Ghostly International debut, Ylajali — is an all-to-appropriate analog to the pair’s approach to music-making: a wash of color, fleeting glimpses of half-remembered imagery both heavenly and apocalyptic, and vertiginous shifts in scale superimposed over its creators’ faces. Syntaks’ Jakob Skott directed the clip, and his clear love of its subject matter (his musical collaborator and romantic partner, Anna Cecilia) is apparent throughout.

Manual

myspace aka jonas munk

Manual is the performing name of electronic musician, Jonas Munk, from Odense, Denmark. Manual’s music is considered to be in the styles of ambient dream pop and indietronica. His sound tends to contain a mix of software synthesizers, guitars (sometimes sampled or heavily processed), and various digital signal processing effects. Mixing elements of pop, glitch, and indie music, Manual is compared to artists ranging from IDM artists, such as Boards of Canada, as well as shoegazer groups like My Bloody Valentine.
Munk’s output as Manual is strongly associated with the aesthetic of Morr Music, the label that released his first two albums. He also is featured on the Morr Music compilation Blue Skied an’ Clear, which was a Slowdive tribute.
However, Munk’s artistic visions didn’t fit into the narrow Morr aesthetic, and in 2004 he joined the American label Darla. Simultaneously, Munk started a psych stoner band called Causa Sui, and they released their self-titled debut album in December 2005. [wiki]

A painstaking labour of love that principally takes Durutti Column and the Cocteau Twins as its key templates and weaves their chiming matrix into a celebratory carnival of lush colour coded ambient structures of the type so rarely heard these days.all at once sensual, invigorating, heart stopping and quite simply perfect………-Losing Today Magazine

…Sonically, its Seefeel meets Sons And Fascination era Simple Minds meets Kevin Shields meets David Sylvian; in other words it inhabits a world where boundaries blur and where sounds collide and move within and around each other to make something instantly, comfortingly recognisable yet with an abstract sense of the new…..-Tangents Magazine

Hijos de Mayo

www.hijosdemayo.com |  myspace

Hijos de Mayo is a stonernoisepostrock band from Eindhoven Rock City. Or poststonernoiserock, whatever you prefer.

Hijos de Mayo started out as an instrumental band in 2006, after having been active as Gifkip for almost 10 years. Influences range from slow spacey grooverock a la Kyuss and 35007, and bands like Mogwai, Helmet, Sonic Youth and Motorpsycho. From thick dense slow riffs, to screeching noise, together with spacious and wide sounds and atmospheres.

In the beginning of 2007 they recorded and self-released their first mini-album. Soon after that they were joined by Boukje (voice and noise) to make even more fun and decibels, adding a Daisy Chainsaw-feel to it in the process.

2008 brought some more changes: Part 1 of The 4-Track Tape Adventures was recorded, this proved to be the last recordings with Joost on drums. He stepped out, and Ivo came to replace him. Near the end of the summer Hijos de Mayo plans to be back on stage.

As Gifkip they recorded two demo’s that got described as adventurous and experimental spacerock. They contributed the song Tom Violence to Evol, a cover-album where different bands recreated Sonic Youth’s infamous album.

Side project: TravelSunnySamsara is a homerecording-project of Chris Draaijer, guitarist of Dutch stonernoisepostrock-band “Hijos de Mayo”. With various instruments (guitars, vibraphonette, sine-generators, sitar, samples, filtered noise, etc.) he creates atmospheric instrumentals, from cinematic dark jazz to fuzzed guitars on pounding beats and thundering soundscapes. myspace

Syntaks

Syntaks’ music evokes an infinitely expanding landscape of papery beats, sighing voices, and hills of sublime noise. In Syntaks’ world, dreams and reality blur into a melodic haze, and nothing is as it seems.

Copenhagen, Denmark-based Jakob Skott has been making music as Syntaks for years, releasing a handful of solo albums on Darla and Benbecula Records, and collaborating with Jonas Munk (his bandmate in psych/krautrock band Causa Sui) as Limp, on Morr Music. In April of 2006, Skott began making music with Anna Cecilia, first adding her vocals to a track on his 2006 album Awakes, and eventually integrating her as a full-time partner. With the addition of Cecilia, a new era of Syntaks was born, fusing

Skott’s densely textured beats and production with Cecilia’s airy, wordless soprano and intuitive songwriting.

Syntaks take their cues from the ambient experiments of Brian Eno and Popol Vuh, the film scores of Ennio Morricone and John Carpenter, and the tonal depth of ‘90s shoegaze bands and early 4AD records. Each sound—from the tinkling of a piano to the snap of a snare drum—has been electronically treated, conjuring an air of unreality that belies the music’s organic construction. Syntaks’ newest record on Ghostly International, 2009’s Ylajali, is a romantic fever dream, a post-rock paean to the transportative, transformative power of sound. Syntaks wraps the couple up like a shroud, absorbing their identities in the pursuit of a heart-stoppingly beautiful vision.

Syntaks’ Mistral Moon EP is a free taste of the Danish duo’s full-length Ylajali, comprising two tracks of Syntaks’ densely layered ambient pop. Syntaks’ songs are textural epics in miniature, meticulously detailed shoegaze symphonies built from Anna Cecilia’s wordless vocalizations and Jakob Skott’s breathtaking production.

syntaks-ylajali

Over a century ago, Norwegian author Knut Hamsun proposed a new creative ideal, a form of literature that would take the intricacies of the human mind as its main object, effectively describing “the whisper of the blood and the pleading of the bone marrow.” One hundred-plus years later, Danish duo (and avid Hamsun devotees) Syntaks have taken up Hamsun’s agenda with single-minded purpose, naming their new album after a character in Hamsun novel Hunger, recording it just blocks from where Hamsun wrote his masterpiece, and taking the author’s ambitious mission statement as their own. The album in question, Syntaks’ luminous Ylajali, crackles with emotion and imagination, giving form to its creators’ vibrant inner lives.
In Ylajali’s beautifully scorched sonic landscape, acres of drones run beneath Anna Cecilia’s wordless sighs; beats crunch like autumn leaves while synthesizers swell, flourish, and disappear. Songs either tramp through hazy forests until they fade into the dark (the Boards of Canada-esque “Love Camp 23”), or stack tone upon tone like translucent building blocks, building to forceful, near-operatic crescendos (the epic “She Moves in Colors”). Syntaks’ Jakob Skott is a drummer by trade, and his percussion—both live and programmed, but always lent an otherworldly sheen—plays the sinister counterpoint to Cecelia’s tender melodies. “The Shape of Things to Come” typifies Syntaks’ dreamlike musical logic, drifting through fields of placid melody until sheets of guitar noise, metallic snares, and choir-like vocals rush in. Once the storm passes, all that’s left is the sun, glinting through the mist.
Hamsun would be proud: Syntaks’ Ylajali is an ambient pop album as dense, emotionally complex, and, ultimately, as mysterious as the human mind; and like any great mystery, Ylajali keeps its audience engrossed until the bittersweet conclusion.

Syntaks’ Jakob Skott created this video for the song “Twentytwohundred” (from his group’s full-length Ylajali), in which the parallels between the Danish artist’s visual and aural sensibilities are on full display. Warm, saturated colors and dreamy, abstract imagery fill the clip with a sense of nostalgic wonder, echoing the music’s romantic mingling of the real and unreal.

Amazing Baby

I made a post about some of the bands from the Wesleyan scene, and left out Amazing Baby, who deserve some space in the shoegaze dept. The ruling about ‘there’s a time and place for everything, and it’s college’ still stands, as you will see by the “Headress” video.   | myspace

There’s plenty of groovy goodness on their CD – “Rewild” check out this Floyd-ish anthemy  2nd track -

I’m listening to Trailer Trash Tracy’s – “Wish You Were Red”.  I have to admit that I fall for noir-ish stuff like a mark at the carney, but what the heck.  The drums in this track sound like they’re off an old drum machine.  Bonus points! shoegaze | distorted guitar riffs | pretty vox | reeeeverb! | lofi

Seratone N is something that everyone can enjoy. We touch upon many different styles and genres. Since November of 2008 Sarah (the lead vocalist), Kim (guitarist/producer), and Derrick (percussionist) have been getting together and spending looong wonderful nights creating hours and hours worth of music. From the beginning everything just fell into place and molded together. As we continued to post our music we continued to get wonderfully positive feedback from many people, many of YOU, and we are so very grateful for it. On May 7th 2009 we did our first live broadcast, we got the chance for a 45 min live show on WPKN (out of Bridgeport Connecticut) and have been invited to come back and do more shows. (a recording of this show will be posted soon) We are in the process of trying to arrange some live performances for the next couple of months, so if you’d like to see Seratone N perform LIVE somewhere in the Long Island NYC area, pass the word around and get us a decent crowd!!! Thank you for all of you listening ears and wonderful support!!!
